Town Branch Commons

Town Branch Commons will be a strip of Bluegrass running through downtown Lexington. This winding park and trail system will roughly following the path of Town Branch, Lexington’s first water source, which is located in a culvert under modern day Vine Street. The system will include continuous bike and walking paths, a lush green band through downtown, connect new and existing parks, and improve water quality.  It will link our city's two major trails, Town Branch Trail and the Legacy Trail, giving us 22 miles of uninterrupted trail, connecting downtown to our world famous rural landscape.

Town Branch Commons is more than a beautiful streetscape and park system through downtown. It is...

  • A strip of history running through our city center

  • A connector of neighborhoods, people, and public spaces

  • Green infrastructure that improves water quality and our urban ecology

  • A transportation network that can be used for far more than just recreation

  • A park with world-class design and a diversity of recreational, educational, arts, and environmental programming

  • A huge step forward for our community’s public space

  • A centerpiece of our community that will be cherished for decades

Town Branch Commons is made possible by a public private partnership between the City of Lexington and Town Branch Park. Project components and responsibilities for each partner include:

  • Town Branch Trail - a dedicated bike and pedestrian path running through the Commons, from Third & Midland to Rupp Arena. The City of Lexington is overseeing this downtown trail along with other components of the first phase of construction for Town Branch Commons. This section of the Commons is fully funded by a diverse array of federal grants, and state and local funds. The trail project is underway and completion is anticipated in 2021. Learn more about the trail design and construction by visiting the City of Lexington’s Town Branch Commons website.

  • Town Branch Park - the signature park located behind Rupp Arena/Lexington Convention Center in the Manchester Street parking lot. This signature element is being funded by private donors committed to the success of the park. Town Branch Park is an independent nonprofit overseeing the fundraising, design, engineering, and construction of the park.
